Mobile-first, cloud computing, big data, etc. – the demand for computer performance is ceaselessly growing throughout the world. Information and communication technology have consequently achieved extremely high priority in any company. The performance levels of IT components are increasingly rising, even in medium-sized companies. As a result, energy consumption and power costs have risen dramatically.
Globally, the power supply for servers and their cooling annually occasions costs of several billion euros. Energy efficiency is accordingly an essential topic and a primary challenge for the operators of data centres. Companies who can best meet this challenge achieve a decisive competitive advantage: reduced operating expenses.
The efficiency of a data centre is measured by its power usage effectiveness: i.e., by determining its PUE value. This value places the entire power consumption of a data centre to the power it consumes to enable actual computer performance. The optimal PUE value is 1.0, but the values of up to 2.0 are nowadays actually typical. Accordingly, it is rarely the case that the energy required for the necessary climate control and other processes in a data centre is just as high as the power required to operate the computers themselves.
But even more: the cooling of server rooms, which of course depends on conditions onsite, can in many cases constitute up to 60 % of the entire energy costs. Given continuously increasing power costs, this situation is not profitable from the standpoints of business management or corporate policy. The reason here is often ineffective cooling concepts.
This situation can be remedied. Today, the use of energy-saving climate-control systems can enable PUE values of 1.2. This improvement has two primary benefits: it significantly reduces energy costs, and it satisfies the requirements set for “green” data centers. Since the systems of a data center are in operation, without interruption, for 365 days a year, continuous and reliable heat removal is essential to assure this continuous operation.
Menerga has become prominent with its intelligent solutions for the highly efficient cooling of data centers. Menerga systems offer reliable removal of heat from data centers – with very low levels of energy consumption. This is possible by the combination of free cooling, adiabatic evaporative cooling, and compression refrigeration. At low temperatures, below 12 °C, indirect, free cooling covers the cooling requirements. This involves physically separating process air and outdoor air, each in separate air paths. At higher outdoor temperatures, adiabatic operation switches on. Using indirect evaporative cooling, the outdoor air is cooled: i.e., by humidification of the outdoor air in the heat exchanger. Heat is removed from the extracted air via the separation surface of the recuperator.
The essential advantage of the adiabatic mode is its low energy requirement with a high level of cooling duty at the same time. Also, the integrated compression refrigeration system can therefore be dimensioned smaller. Another associated benefit is the reduced amount of refrigerant in the cooling cycle.
This solution enables companies to save energy costs by appreciably minimizing operating expenses – and offers benefits in view of corporate ecological and social responsibilities.
