Mülheim to become Climate Zone
Making our city more climate-friendly – this is the goal of the initiators of the “Climate Zone 2010” campaign. Mülheim’s citizens, companies, scientists and artists will have the chance to participate in a variety of projects, workshops and activities.
“Visualize your city in the year 2040 and start to design it!”, Dagmar Mühlenfeld challenges the citizens of Mülheim. The lord mayor is patron of the “Climate Zone 2010” project, which is developed and supported by the “Mülheimer Initiative für Klimaschutz e.V.” [Mülheim Initiative for Climate Protection].
The campaign aims at declaring Mülheim “Climate Zone 2010”. Several activities about climate protection and energy efficiency are planned within the scope of this project. “We want to develop a climate culture in Mülheim, which focuses on all segments of society,” Dr. Susanne Dickel, director of the “Mülheimer Initiative für Klimaschutz”, says. “The Climate Zone 2010 is a platform, to which everyone can contribute his or her knowledge and creativity in terms of climate protection.”
Many business, science, politics and society representatives are already involved in the campaign. “Climate protection has become an important economic factor,” Jürgen Schnitzmeier from “Mülheim & Business” says, “on the one hand as a driving force for jobs in our region, and on the other hand to create a positive public image to make Mülheim a center of business activity.”
Dr. Röben from Menerga GmbH underlines this approach. “The Climate Zone provides a platform for small and medium-sized companies in Mülheim to present their climate-related topics far beyond Mülheim’s borders. Furthermore, we want to intensify our cooperation with education institutes such as schools, vocational schools and our new technical college, in order to make the location Mülheim more attractive to professional newcomers.”
Mülheim’s scientists are also interested in designing a new climate culture for their city. In the next few months, the project “ClimateCampus” will be initiated, in which their knowledge about climate research and development will be bundled. “We are looking forward to an exciting discourse, and we are open for any kind of knowledge transfer”, Prof. Dr. Eberhard Menzel of the “Hochschule Ruhr West” declares. “Students will welcome this gain to their scientific education, as it will clearly broaden their range of topics.”
Alexander Voß of „Kunsthaus e.V.“ organizes the „Art in the Climate Zone“ competition. “Art and culture are dominant features of a city’s climate and I’m looking forward to a lot of creative input from Mülheim’s artists in this workshop. Everyone is invited to participate.”
